Nuclear fire consumed the great cities of the world, and a dark winter fell across the earth. Those who survived were few, sheltered in hidden bunkers, stranded in remote wilderness, or simply lucky enough to escape the first storms of fire.

The centuries that followed, remembered as the Dark Centuries, erased civilization. Governments crumbled. Nations became myths. The world splintered into tribes, raider warbands, scavenger clans, and the bunker born, those who emerged generations later with fragments of old world knowledge, often using it to seize power.

Technology faltered replaced by rusting relics and improvised weapons. Knowledge exists only in broken archives, faded memories, and whispered stories of the world that was. The land itself turned hostile: poisoned rivers, ruined cities, and wastelands haunted by mutated creatures and wandering Ashlanders, nomads who still tell of the "Burning Sky."
